How To Spray Paint Knobs

My master bathroom started out with the same brushed nickel knobs as every other cabinet and drawer in my home.  I always had hopes of replacing them with some cute Anthropologie knob but after you price out the cost of twenty two knobs, it's a little scary.  The light fixtures used to be brushed nickel faded to gold until we updated them with hammered black spray paint.  All the faucets are shiny chrome, so our bathroom originally had a plethora of metal fininishes (yuck).  We are near finished in our laundry room (it's only been 4 years of a construction zone) and we needed a handful of knobs for the new cabinets and drawers.  So it was either get new knobs for the laundry room or use the bathroom knobs and get new ones for my bathroom.  I chose the latter.

But wait....I suddenly remembered my clever skills at hoarding and decided to check my "KNOBS HINGES LEGS" tub where I found a bag of 17 knobs I purchased about twelve years ago at a yard sale.

They were old, dirty, and splattered with paint with slightly varying designs.

.......or in other words....PERFECT!!

First I gave them a bath in the sink and a little scrub with an old toothbrush.  Then I punched holes in a box and screwed the knobs through the holes to help them stand up for optimum painting angles.  I grabbed my bottle of Hammered Black Rust-Oleum I always keep on hand, and gave them two solid coats.  After thorough drying time, I removed the knobs from the holes in the box and laid them on their fronts.  I then gave them one coat to touch up the backs and sides.  I repeated this same technique with four of my original bathroom knobs and one extra knob I found at Habitat for Humanity that nearly matched the 17 I had been hoarding storing in my garage.

There are about 4 variations of knobs now on my cabinets.  There are four solid knobs like the one in the center photo above.  These I placed on the four larger drawers located at the bottom of the vanities.  Four knobs are the originals and they are located on the four cabinets.  The rest of the knobs are nearly identical variations of the knob you see in the left photo above.

I love the pop that the black makes against the white vanities.  The knobs have taken an old fashion quality to them and mimic the feeling of the tiled floor.  I'm trying to hold myself back from spray painting all the cabinet and drawer knobs in the whole house.  It's a simple process with a big result.
