Washing A Sheepskin Rug

My family and I went on a camping trip a couple weeks ago.  We were gone two nights, so we planned for a neighbor to feed and take care of our animals for us.  Unfortunately one of our cats was locked in the bedroom the entire time.  Thank goodness she had the toilet for water, but without a kitty litter box, my sheepskin rug was the next best thing.  I love this thing and although it's been around for about 7 years, it's still in decent shape.  So how do you get cat urine out of a sheep skin that loves to welcome your bare feet to the ground every morning?

I filled up our baby pool with water and about a tablespoon or two of baby shampoo.

I let the sheepskin soak up the water until I could fit the whole thing in my baby pool.

I gave the rug a good scrub, getting my fingers deep into the wool.  There wasn't a whole lot of bubbles as there isn't much soap in this process.

This rug is heavy to begin with so can imagine when it is full of water it weighs a small ton.  I dragged it onto a canvas drop cloth I had on my grass.

I rolled up the rug in the drop cloth....

Then I stood on it.  I walked along the 'burrito' which pushed out gallons of water.

It's still pretty heavy at this point so my chaise lounge with wheels was very handy.  I laid the rug wool side down and let it dry in the sun for the rest of the day.  Okay, actually I forgot about it and found that by the next afternoon it was dry...

My wire cat brush worked great to vigorously groom my rug.

You can see it's prime spot next to my side of the bed.
